Creation Science Counter-Quiz

You’ve probably seen this picture already: a real quiz from a private school in South Carolina.

A creationist kid's quiz.

I really want to know why 8, 9 and 10 were omitted.

Says the father of the girl who took the test in question:

I didn’t know that this was being taught to her until we heard a radio commercial together about the Discover the Dinosaurs exhibit was coming to the TD Convention Center [in Greenville, South Carolina].

The Commercial starts out, “After 65 million years, the dinosaurs have returned …” She commented immediately that it was only four thousand years ago. When I corrected her, she snapped back, “Were you there?” I have since taught my daughter differently, but I am sure she is confused now and plan to make sure she understands that teachers are people too and
can be factually wrong.

The test showed up [at] home a day later to my disgust.

It’s a great school for Reading, Writing and Math. She is ahead of most of her peers and also is taking Latin there. But I now know to be vigilant for the rest of the year about her science teachings.

She will not be attending the school next year …

You have to wonder just exactly what he expected. It’s a private religious school in South Carolina. They’re not going to compete in the state science fair, that’s for certain.

Still, it’s a shame that his kid, among many others, is being so woefully misinformed by Blue Ridge Christian Academy. Now that this has come to light, perhaps other parents wish to un-brainwash their kids. Perhaps with a Creationism Studies class? Allow me to help that along, with my beta 4th grade Creation Science Studies Quiz!

Many thanks as always to talk.origins.org, where I spent many a day in my high school years when I should have been going to proms and sports and shit.

You can download a blank PDF here. Happy standardized testing, everybody!

Kajed, my first thought, being a confirmed skeptic, was that this had to be a hoax because it seemed not only stupid but an ugly trick to play on little kids. So, I went to the always trustworthy Snopes.com and . . . darned if it isn’t true! I’m depressed. 😦

Yes, very depressing, but glad it came out. Like you said, maybe they’ll be shamed. And just maybe they’ll stop the ignorance.

  3. May 5, 2013 at 10:41 pm

This is just really sad. Question question question everything.

  4. May 5, 2013 at 11:41 pm

Even question science? Just wondering. Or is that the only thing one can NEVER question?

Cal, you just proved that you don’t understand science. Science is not an ideology, nor is it dogma. It is a process that has skepticism at its heart and arrives at truth asymptotically.

Cal, I really suggest check out question 8, which already disposes of your ridiculous objection, and makes me think you didn’t actually read the post, or what it is written in response to. Arguments against science aren’t merely philosophical wanking – you have to deal with evidence. Feel free to question science all you like, but it looks pretty silly railing against the huge amount of evidence for evolution. Would you like to put Newton’s laws of gravitation by jumping off a tall building? This guy called Einstein said Newton’s wrong about gravity (for very small values of ‘wrong’). Scientists question each other’s work all the time.

Of course you should question science (Andrew Wakefield is a good example). Of course science has questioning built into its methodology. Does your local church or the religious book you subscribe to allow questioning?

PS: Calvin and Luther cannot kick my atheist behind – the last time I checked they were dead (unless Calvin and Luther are the names of a couple of guys who hang out at the 7-11).

PPS: Even if “Intelligent Design” were somehow true, it would not mean that the designer was Jehovah/Yahweh/the God of the Bible. It could be Ahura Mazda, Aten, Vishnu, Cronos, or a Cosmic Cow.

      • May 10, 2013 at 3:52 am

Personally I’m rooting for Cosmic Cow.

The reason he hasn’t come back is because we keep eating burgers.

Calvin and Luther are so AWESOME they can “Kick Your Behind” from beyond the grave. LOL

      • May 17, 2013 at 5:53 am

My God does allow questioning. Isn’t that what Job did? All of the evidence I’ve seen points to the Christian God as the only True Living God. And Calvin and Luther, and can KICK YOUR ATHEIST BEHIND and the other Calvin and Luther that hang out at the 7-11 can too. LOL.

Wow, angry and depressed! Whenever I am discussing why religious people are religious I always start with – Indoctrination.

  6. May 7, 2013 at 2:09 am

    Jim, science is a philosophy.

Haven’t you seen the fraud perpetrated by scientists lately? The Korean dog cloning incident? The global warming incidents? And there are others. Sometimes the research amazingly tells people exactly what they want to hear. Funny how that works.

    • May 16, 2013 at 2:10 pm

Not sure what your point is here. Scientists exposing science fraud are shut down by corporates who would lose money due to the exposure does not say anything about science itself. It certainly does not disprove science as a way of establishing the truth. It does show that truth does not always win, which, as a believer in dogma that has been shown to be false, you probably would not recognise

      • May 17, 2013 at 1:49 am

I think the point is scientist are trusted way too much. Unless you have a lab and can repeat their experiments your putting a lot of “blind faith” in them.

Calvin it was never said that science is without flaw. But then nothing on this earth is without flaw. However as a Christian I find your arguments juvenile. I accept that science is real, science is logical, science proves things. If my religion did this it would be accepted by a scientist in an instant. But that would ruin the faith side of it. Stop behaving like a pouting child throwing a tantrum.

Great quiz; but in question 10, it was Enki/Ea who told Utnapishtim to build an ark. Utnapishtim then told the story to Gilgamesh hundreds of years later, after being made immortal for his trouble.

The teacher of this class has received death threats by the way.

  10. May 17, 2013 at 3:35 am

Xanthe – you sound like a “fundamentalist”.

  11. May 17, 2013 at 3:35 am

Kage – you will always be my “little Bo Bo”. Even if you don’t want to be. 🙂

I found this post because we were trying to ID a giant moth. Thanks for that. Too bad your t-shirt stuff was so explicit. I had my 8 year old standing next to me and had to scramble to keep him from reading any of that filth. I am a Christian by the way, and I also teach my children according to what I believe the truth is. That’s what most parents do, it’s their right and sacred duty. But I don’t do it because it’s what my parents taught me, or because I’m a “right wing fundamentalist republican- insert- stereotype-here” I was raised in public school, where evolution is taught and accepted as fact. I have plenty of evidence now for a young earth that was created in 6 days. But you know what- I wouldn’t give it to you, because it doesn’t matter how much evidence a person has. The truth is, that believing in evolution also takes faith- because, well- none of us were there. It’s so scientifically ridiculous- you can not get something, anything, from nothing. Amazingly complex things don’t just appear, made from nothing on giant rocks also made from nothing. We’re all expected to believe that instead of a miracle working, personal God? Sorry Dude, you’re on your own there. (You may feel you have plenty of company as a God hater- but you’ll find yourself very alone on the day you die- if it’s as a God hater). Not only that, but what it really comes down to is that Psalm 14 says, “The Fool has said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that does good.” It comes down to this: you know God is real according to Romans 1:16-25 “16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
17 For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.
    18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;
19 Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.
20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:
21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,
23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.
24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:
25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.”
